Our client operates a 5-star beachfront resort in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, with 86 guest suites, three outdoor pools, one 28-metre infinity pool and a heated spa pool. The property runs events and night-time poolside dining from April to October, and pool ambience is a rated item in their guest satisfaction score.
The Challenge: Aging Halogen Fixtures and Rising Operating Cost
Before the upgrade, the resort ran 42 units of legacy 300W halogen PAR56 lamps in Pentair and Hayward niches. The engineering team faced four persistent problems:
- Unsustainable energy load: 42 fixtures x 300W running 7 hours nightly during high season added roughly €18,000 per year to the electricity bill.
- Water ingress failures: Aged halogen housings and gaskets failed at about a 15% annual rate. Every replacement required a diver or partial pool drain - roughly €260 in labour per fixture.
- No scene control: The fixed-colour halogen lamps could not support the resort's event schedule, and guests consistently rated "pool atmosphere" below the competing properties nearby.
- Compliance pressure: The resort's insurer required CE and RoHS documentation plus verified IP68 ingress protection for every underwater luminaire before renewal.
The resort needed a retrofit that would drop into existing niches without breaking the pool shell, and it had to be completed during low season with zero pool downtime.
The Solution: A Drop-in IP68 LED Retrofit Program
1. Direct niche retrofit, no re-cabling. We supplied our flat resin-filled PAR56 LED lamp (model LH-P-01) engineered to the exact dimensions of the Pentair / Hayward / Jandy niches already installed. The existing 12V transformers and conduit were reused - the crew simply pulled the halogen lamp and seated the LED unit. No tile work and no structural modification.
2. Fully potted IP68 construction. Every lamp is resin-filled rather than gasket-sealed, so there is no air cavity inside the housing. This removes the condensation and capillary-leak path that caused the previous 15% failure rate, and the 12V DC low-voltage design keeps the whole pool area safe for guests.
3. Smart RGB control for the infinity pool and spa. The infinity pool and spa received our ultra-thin RGB series with Tuya / WiFi group control (model LH-S-01). The engineering team now runs 16 preset scenes from a phone - sunset warm white for dining, slow colour fade for events, full white for cleaning - with zones controllable independently.
4. Batch verification before shipment. The full order ran a 72-hour continuous submersion test at 1.5 m depth plus salt-spray testing to simulate the seafront environment. Test reports and the CE / RoHS package were delivered with the shipment for the insurance file.
The Results: Measured Over Two Full Seasons
- 86% less lighting energy: Per-fixture draw dropped from 300W to 42W, cutting the pool lighting portion of the electricity bill by more than four fifths.
- Zero water-ingress failures in 24 months: Not a single lamp has been pulled for moisture ingress since installation, versus roughly six per year previously.
- About 72% lower annual maintenance cost: No diver callouts and no unscheduled pool closures for lamp replacement.
- +0.6 guest score on pool ambience: The infinity pool is now the most photographed area of the property and appears regularly in guest reviews.
- Installed in four nights, zero pool closure: The whole retrofit was completed during low-season nights and every pool opened on schedule the next morning.
